In this free French lesson for beginners, we will focus on the French alphabet. The French alphabet is identical to the English one with 26 letters, 5 vowels and 21 consonants (although Y can be considered to be both a vowel and consonant). The pronunciation of many of these letters varies however, so it is important to emphasise it when learning. (See video to practice pronunciation) A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z Approximate transcription: aa, bay, say, day, e, ef, zhay, ash, ee, jee, kaa, el, em, en, o, pay, ku, er, es, tay, u, vay, double vay, ix, ee greg, zed The most difficult sounds are R, U & Q and it is important not to get confused with English for A and R, E and I, G and J ! The accents French has also a series of accents and a "cédille" which modify the pronunciation. We will only focus on their names in this presentation. With the exception of "ç", all of them accompany vowels and I will use the letter e to introduce them. é = accent aigu è = accent grave ê = accent circonflexe ë = tréma ç = c cédille That's it, that's all there is to know about the French Alphabet !
